Students in Ms. Biega's Ceramics II class are learning about something called a "chop". Chops or seals have been used for centuries in China to sign a person's name or family name onto objects such as documents, art, and literary works. Used since the Shang dynasty (1600-1046 BC), chops allowed the writer or document signer to place their name on an object.
Modern day potter's have continued using this method to sign his/her artwork. Using the Blackhawk C3 Lab, we have given the ancient chop a modern twist. Instead of students carving their chop from stone, they have used computers to design their work and the Makerbot 3D printers to print them!
